Kid's Program
Q: How old does my child
have to be to start training?
A: We recommend that children start
at 4 years old. However, since no two kids are the same, and there can
be significant differences in coordination and maturity, we are willing
to evaluate children younger than 4.

Q: How large are your
class sizes?
A: Class sizes range between 10
– 30 students in each class. Beginner classes often fluctuate in
class size as children progress to the next belt level.

Q: What is the ratio of
Instructor to Kid?
A: Each time our class sizes increase,
we accommodate with an increase in instructors per class and assistant
instructors. We attempt to maintain a 1 to 6 ratio of Instructor to kids.
Q: My child is already
very energetic – I’m afraid martial arts training will encourage
aggression, is this true?
A: Not at all! In fact, martial
arts provides an outlet for children in which to channel aggression and
excess energy. Our children’s programs focus on developing behavioural
and attitudinal aspects inherent with martial arts such as respect, confidence,
discipline and control. Through providing a fun and safe atmosphere for
kids, we can foster a healthy environment in which they can learn and
develop not only self-defense skills, but life skills as well.

Q: Teaching kids is not
easy – what qualifications do your instructors have to teach my
child?
A: Teaching kids is definitely
not easy! But it is one of the most rewarding experiences in the world.
All of our instructors have been certified to teach through Therien Jiu-Jitsu
and Kickboxing Schools, and our children’s program Instructors are
among the most experienced and capable Instructors in Ottawa. Through
our Instructor Development Program, we essentially teach our black belts
how to teach in order to ensure your child receives the highest quality
Instruction.

Jiu-Jitsu Program
Q: Is Jiu-Jitsu all grappling
and wrestling?
A: Jiu-Jitsu includes grappling
and groundfighting techniques. Some schools will focus only on those aspects,
mainly for the purpose of martial arts wrestling competitions. We teach
all facets of Jiu-Jitsu, so you will be learning a complete martial art.

Q: Will I learn self defense in your Jiu-Jitsu
program?
A: Absolutely. Therien Jiu-Jitsu
is world renowned for its real life self defense applications. Many of
our instructors are current and former police officers who bring a level
of professionalism and expertise to the self defense applications in our
program that is unmatched.

Q: I’m not in the best shape. Can
I still take a Jiu-Jitsu Class?
A: Of course! In fact, our beginner
classes are an excellent way to get into shape. Not only will you learn
the essential skills of self-defense, but you will also focus on muscle
strengthening and endurance, cardio, and flexibility.

Kickboxing Program
Q: I haven’t really
exercised in a long time. Is kickboxing too intense for me to start with?
A: One of the great things about
kickboxing ( if your doctor gives you the ok to start a regular exercise
program) is that you start off at your own pace, gradually increasing
the level of intensity as you get more fit.

Q: What makes your kickboxing program different
from what is being offered at other facilities?
A: We have been teaching kickboxing
long before it became the “in” thing to do. We teach the “real
thing” in a fitness format, which is very different from an aerobics
class with some awkward punches and kicks thrown in. You will learn real
kickboxing techniques and actually progress and gain knowledge, while
getting the best workout of you life. After just a few classes you will
understand why no other program can match what we offer.

Q: Is there any contact in your kickboxing
classes?
A: There is no contact in our
regular kickboxing classes. You learn all the basic skills and get in
the best shape of your life, but you never have to participate in any
sparring activity unless you choose to pursue some of our competitive
programs.

Q: Am I too old to start
kickboxing?
A: Our kickboxing clients range
in age from 16 to some in their 60s. If you are able to play a recreational
sport, participate in a fitness class, go for a jog or a swim then you
should be fine to start up kickboxing. Our introductory program includes
2 private classes to help you feel comfortable and to give you a chance
to gage this for yourself. You’re only as old as you feel, give
yourself a chance to feel as young as you can.

Q: I’m not in the
best shape. Can I still take a Kickboxing Class?
A: Of course! Our classes are
designed so that beginners can set their own individual pace, and progressively
increase their own level of intensity. Our Instructors are there to guide
and motivate you, but ultimately, the intensity level of your workout
is in your hands.
